10/05/98 A view from above, looking north, showing the near
side of the roof complete except for the metal roofing. The
rafters are covered with plywood sheathing and a layer of tar
paper.
10/05/98 Looking east at the "front" of the building, you
can see the front door in the center. Three windows on the
left have been installed but are not visible because they
are covered with plywood for
protection against breakage.
10/05/98 Detail of how the 2" x 4" braces between the rafters are
inlet into the rafter 1/4" and nailed from both sides.
10/05/98 The elements of the roof structure are seen in this
photo. The vertical and horizontal 4" x 6" beams form the basic
framework. The 2" x 6" rafters (diagonal) on 2 foot centers rest
on the beams. 2" x 4" braces run between the rafters to brace
them and to provide additional fastening surface for the
plywood roof sheathing as well as the metal roofing.
10/05/98 Detail of the roof overhang on the south side of
the building. The rafters are installed on two foot centers,
and the cross braces on four foot centers, matching the
edges of the plywood roof sheathing.
10/05/98 A view from the north, showing the location of the
new building in relation to the existing house (white roof)
at 2001 Low Gap Road.
11/24/98 Looking east at the front of the new building.
The roof is complete with four skylights, and metal "galvalume"
roofing and flashing. The outside of the house still needs doors, trim,
decking, and paint.
12/9/98 Looking north across the creek,
this is winter at Orr Creek Research Center.
The roof of the new building is in the foreground.
The old big house
is on the left, but
can't be seen in the deep shadows.
It's 1:30 pm, and this is as close as the sun
gets to the research buildings for several months.
It's about as warm as it will get -
40 degrees on the porch of the big house.
